It was a beautiful Mother’s Day at the Jenny Calderwood Fun Run held at Peterhouse.
Many thanks to all or the organizers, supporters, sponsors and participants! Thank you so much for the incredible work behind the scenes by so many people. Our thanks go to the Rector of Peterhouse, Howard Blackett, for being so gracious in allowing us to continue to do the run.
Thanks also to the Peterhouse Community for their total support of this amazing event – from the bands to the bagpipes, to all the boys and girls who participated with such enthusiasm, and the incredible Housemaster’s and House mistresses who rallied the different “houses” and created such great competition in raising money.

Hospital to Imire Bike Ride 2013 |
|
|
|
|
This year Peterhouse Boys sent a bus load of sixteen boys to participate in various distances of the Borradaile Hospital Fundraising Mountain Bike Ride. Our boys road various distances (up to 75km) and all contributed to the worthy charity. The ride culminated at Imire Game Park where we all relaxed, enjoyed some lunch and the wonderful experience of the elephant encounter. This year for the first time the ride broke the 100 riders barrier (with 112 participating) and is now a recognised event on the annual Zimbabwean Mountain Biking calendar – which Peterhouse will continue to proudly support.

The tennis tour started with a practice session at Harare Sports Club. This was a gruelling introduction for the boys that left many with blisters to nurse and stiff muscles. The flight down to Durban went well and we were surprised to bump into the Hurricanes at Oliver Tambo Airport. The long trip found us thankful and rather exhausted reaching Michaelhouse at 10pm and going straight to bed in the luxurious indoor sports centre.
The following morning after a delicious and impressive breakfast was spent on another long practice session on the courts. Shortly after lunch the matches began. It soon became evident that they were quite formidable opponents and despite going down 9 matches to 3, we played hard losing one or two games very narrowly. Michaelhouse were great hosts and the boys, understandably were very impressed with the facilities at the school.

This year fourteen boys travelled down to take part in the Durban High School International Tournament. As part of the preparations there was a stopover in Johannesburg and we played a "friendly" game vs Petreans. We were so pleased to see the older players.
In the tournament we played 5 games and won 3. Unfortunately we lost in the quarter finals but we had a great time on tour.

Sailing at Peterhouse 2013 |
|
|
|

We have several boys who are brilliant sailors at this school. Whilst we do not currently sail on any of the dams in the vicinity, we support the boys as they go out to Lake Chivero and sail there.
Boys are sailing Oppies, Enterprises, Flying Fifteens and Darts. Some are also board sailors. Sailing School, held in April this year at Lake Chivero, saw many of the Peterhouse boys and Springvale children taking away prizes for their efforts.

A small group of dedicated adventure racers made the journey East to Nyanga to push their bodies and minds to a new level during the school holidays. Three boys trained long and hard in the Lent term for this event. This year some Peterhouse boys rode with members of their own families, which is brilliant. Whole families racing together is very special, and hopefully we can build on this momentum.
Brad Ross rode with his Dad, Graham in the Ultra Category. Brad was the first school boy ever to compete in this Level in the 14 years that this competition has been held. This category was fiercely contested and they achieved a very respectable 2nd place.

This year Mission Week happened in the last week of Lent term. The event ran from Tuesday to Friday, with the Zambesi Holidays team arriving on Monday night. The Mission Week team enjoyed a braai on Monday evening, which proved an excellent way to kick start the week.
The main aim of Mission Week is to give the boys and girls exposure to some of the best Bible teachers and preachers in Southern Africa and this year our main speakers were Darren Pickard of Baptist Bible Church in Chisipite, Martin Morrison of Christ Church Midrand and Scott Marques, a Petrean businessman who is involved with numerous churches in Harare. The girls also had the privilege of hearing from Regina Jones, Val Martin and others during the course of the week.

Gosho Park A new sable calf been seen and is doing well and a wildebeest calf was born on 27th March. The Wildebeeste have now formed two herds and all the animals are spending time on the new pasture. There have been sighting of several flocks of guinea fowl and it was noted that the chicks are almost adult now. Snare sweeps have been done by the Peterhouse Boys International Award pupils – thankfully nothing has been found. Measures have been taken to control ticks, thanks to research done by Peter Jackson, who is also investigating what micronutrients can be added to the feed.
