I write to invite you to this term’s Parents’ Forum meeting at which I will be launching the Peterhouse Group’s new ALPHA programme (an holistic approach to academic support for pupils); I will also be briefing parents on our latest developments concerning curriculum support – we are in the process of building/developing brand new Curriculum Support departments at Springvale House, Peterhouse Girls and Peterhouse Boys at a cost of $150k and the provision of Curriculum Support teaching is also being enhanced.

I will be accompanied by:

Malvern House Refurbishment June 2018

At the start of term our Malvern boys returned to their newly refurbished house and, by all accounts, they are delighted with their accommodation.

The project was completed in two phases, starting with the total renovation of the ablution block, and followed by the full refurbishment of the house.

Much has been done to make the space as comfortable as possible for the boys including separate common rooms for the juniors and the seniors. The house is also more spacious as the old Malvern Common Room has now been converted into a sleeping/living space.

C Block Outback 2018

Peterhouse now has a four year progressive Wilderness [Leadership and Personal Development] Programme. The Outback is phase two of this and is a 3 day wilderness expedition, with teambuilding, development of outdoor skills and personal development challenges integrated into the journey.

This is the sixth year we have run the Outback programme, and we have added a lot more reflective practice to really help pry out the teambuilding metaphors and experiences. This year we gave all the boys a journal, with coupled with daily reflective sessions facilitated by Outward Bound we really are maximising the learning opportunities from these unique experiences given to Peterhouse pupils.

Kidzcan Charity Run/Walk in 2018

Raising money for children suffering from Cancer

Even though only five days had passed since parents had dropped off their loved ones at boarding school to start a new term, they returned in huge numbers to join them again for Mother’s Day and to have a good walk/run in aid of Kidzcan on the first Sunday morning of term.

It was an absolutely beautiful day, with warm autumn sunshine and champagne blue skies. After an opening prayer, the Chaplain led all of us through a minute’s silence, remembering all those in our special community who we have lost, or who we know are suffering from this disease. Our Music Department sang ‘Run for Life’ to end this special occasion.

Golf Tour to Sun City South Africa 2018

A small group of five boys and I, their manager, travelled to Sun City, South Africa to take part in the schools golf tournament. One boy, Matthew Bramford with his personal trainer had travelled ahead of the tournament dates, a few days before the rest of the team in order to practise and get the feel of the golf courses. On April the 28th good-byes to parents and guardians were said as the team checked in to catch their early morning SAA flight.

On arrival at OR Tambo, the tour organisers picked us up together with a team from Gymnasium High School of Namibia, in a hired bus. About two hours later, we had reached our destination, Sun City, home to two world class golf courses, four fine hotels including the famous Palace of the Lost City, casinos, a waterpark, a safari park and some fantastic restaurants.

Hockey Tour to Holland 2018

The squad, clad in their chinos, white golf shirts, caps and jackets branded with the Kings logo bade farewell to the rector, staff and friends of Peterhouse Boys School and headed off to the airport to embark on the long waited for tour. This tour to the first world was coming almost 20 years after the last one. Parents had worked flat out to support their children and bring the tour to fruition. In large numbers they waited for the squad at the airport to say their goodbyes before departure. That marked the beginning of the journey to Netherlands.

Danish Cultural Exchange Tour 2018

We had an amazing and very productive Cultural Exchange Tour to Denmark.

Our pupils started off with a team building exercise in the Indoor Sports Centre and each of our pupils had been allocated a buddy on arrival. The buddies were from the group that had visited us earlier this year in February.

In History lessons they compared our constitution to the Danish constitution and eventually came up with their own constitutions for the kind of country that they would like to live in.

In Robotics lessons they built trucks in the form of robots that are self-driving whose main purpose is to sort garbage.

Adventurous Journey for Bronze Awarders to Nyanga 2018

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

For this Bronze Journey, we decided to climb Mt Nyangani and explore the Nyazengu Forest. We had five groups of Awarders, of various ages. All of them attended several evenings of training, so that they were as well prepared for this Journey as they possibly could be.

The special aspect of this particular Journey was the interaction we had with National Parks in Nyanga. Mr Sibanda, the new Area Manager, could not have been more helpful or welcoming. As we were climbing Mt Nyangani, he organized for a knowledgeable scout to come with us – Emmanuel. Overall, we felt so well looked after by National Parks and I would recommend a visit to Rhodes Nyanga National Park for anyone interested in being able to have the most beautiful walks.
