Mission Week 2019

The 2019 Mission Week took place from the 12th – 19th of February, when nine Zambezi Holidays leaders devoted their time to building relationships, answering questions and promoting a deeper relationship-based Christian faith within the Peterhouse senior schools. The theme was ‘Therefore, Stand’, based on Ephesians 6:10-17 which speaks about putting on the various aspects of the armour of God. The focus for the week was to promote a deeper understanding for the necessity of reading the Bible and praying in order to build your faith and relationship with God, and to stand on the word of God in any trial or situation.

Careers Fair 2019

We hosted a Careers' Fair at Peterhouse Boys last week.  The event was supported by a large number of universities/agents from various corners of the globe (including Exeter University, UK) and was attended by pupils in the 5th and 6th forms from PHB, PHG and other local schools.

I would like to thank Jenny Kirkman our Careers' Officer for organising the event - it was a great success.

By the way we deliver excellent careers' advice (Jenny Kirkman works from the first floor of the Megahey Centre) helping pupils to gain access to universities in the UK, USA,. Canada, Europe, South Africa, Australia, new Zealand etc.!

Rowing Training before the South Africa Champs 2019

I popped down to the dam the other day to see how everyone was getting along on their last dam day of training before they leave for RSA Rowing Champs.

What an amazing bunch of people this Tour squad is made up of. As always, in spite of the wind and dark skies, I found them so positive, ever so helpful, so gusty and determined. I have no doubt that they will have an amazing time together in South Africa. There was a mad scurry after this picture was taken before anyone could get pushed into the water off the jetty!

Scott and Sean, Aiden and Aqua, in their little boats ‘putt-putting’ up and down in the choppy waters – smiling and encouraging our children as they glided on by. Many, MANY thanks to all four coaches for their time and dedication over the last few months, preparing them for this Tour.

Mururu Learner Guides Course 2019

Our sixth form Learner Guides went to Makore in the Save Conservancy for an intense course run by Mururu Hospitality. Each morning started with an early bush walk – identifying birds, trees and game viewing along the river bank. Other topics included practical tracking, photography, ballistics, SCI measurements and skulls, radio procedure and use of a GPS.

Pupils also had a lecture on hospitality, table settings, etiquette for fine dining and the dos and don’ts of entertaining guests. One evening the discussion was on ethics – both in the hunting and the photographic industry. Some of our past pupils were in the top group hoping to go for their proficiency exam at the end of the year.

D Block Basecamp 2019

‘A ship in harbor is safe - but that is not what ships are built for.”

— John A. Shedd, Salt from My Attic

Indeed, you can get to see how strong, creative, resilient, humorous and gutsy boys really are when they are outside – doing what young boys can do best – making rafts, making fires, shooting targets with pellet guns, abseiling off rock faces and scrambling up kopjes to observe the views below.

Even the boys surprised themselves on this Basecamp and were ‘better ships that they ever imagined’ – some enjoyed camping for the first time, walked further than they thought they could, cooked their own supper on an open fire, ate no tuck for a few days (and survived), learnt knots and how to make shelters!

Peterhouse MUN Conference 2019

The first Peterhouse Model United Nations (MUN) conference was held on 9 February 2019. 78 delegates attended from the MUN clubs of Arundel, St Georges, The French School and Harare International School. The theme of the conference was ‘Are we really at peace’.

The event was productive as well as fun. The Secretary General, Rufaro Hoto, in his address spoke about legacy and how the conference adds onto the legacy that he and his team have been working on. The guest speaker, Ms. Tsitsi Mutasa spoke of the importance of being humble and not feeling entitled because of your position. She spoke of the importance of defining who you are and the role you should play in society.

Peterhouse delegates did very well and were recognised as follows;

Learner Guides Imire Field Trip 2019

Our Fifth Form Learner Guides pupils went to Imire Game Park over the weekend – this was their first field trip so they had plenty to learn. Being close up to elephants and rhinos gave an opportunity for close observation both of physical features and of animal behaviour. Lessons and practical’s included tracking, details of approaches to game, shot placement, insect collections and bird identification.

The night drive always adds interest – my last visit to Imire we saw an aardvaak but he was nowhere to be found this time.

We were invited to observe a tracker dog at work following tracks left by a ‘poacher’ – an amazing animal which will be a great benefit to Imire once it is fully trained.
