Winning Gold & Silver at the South African Rowing Champs 2020

“Race day had come. Roodeplaat dam was overloaded with hundreds of tents and people all hungry to row. I was nervous and scared, my heart couldn’t stop pumping. My coach gave me the talk before I went out and he said, ‘Prove the nay-sayers wrong! Show them who you are and what you can do.’ As I approached the green, slimey waters, I entered my boat, hands quivering, head shaking and I said, ‘Let’s have at it!’” T.J. Gwaziwa

Our young rowers went to the SA Champs which were held at Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria, South Africa, on the 1st March, to compete in the Regatta held over the first weekend of March from the 6th to 8th , 2020. It was a wonderful experience for our rowers. A great deal of hard work and effort went into getting our athletes ready to compete down South.

The team of parents and support staff were phenomenal; from Nigel and Sophie Weller, who towed the boats down (a noble task), to Laura Evans- our extremely competent tour manager- Sarah Shoesmith, the come along mum had boundless energy and limitless enthusiasm, Hannah Coetzee and Aiden Blignaut who have spent hours on the water refining the technique of our athletes, and myself. The pupils were fed copious quantities of food and they were well looked after.

All our athletes did well. They have come away richer from the experience and the high levels of competition, but of particular note were Kayla Kalweit and Genevieve Shoesmith. Kayla managed to achieve a Gold in the Under 16 single scull race, and Genevieve and Kayla achieved a silver medal in their Under 16 double scull.

Emmanuel Nyamupingidza and Reagan Evans also did well. They both narrowly missed a bronze medal in the Under 16 double scull race, doing very well to come in fourth.

The competition was stiff, and our athletes have a good idea of what is needed to get ready for SA Champs 2021.

A huge thank you goes out to all our Rowing Parents who spend a great deal of their time and money supporting their children in this incredible sport.
