Rifa Conservation Education Camp 2020

Our Learner Guides group went up to Rifa last week and they had a great learning experience – sadly we were missing the Zambian pupils. Bush walks were done in the morning to identify animals, birds, trees, tracks etc. and we covered a variety of different habitats e.g. mopane woodlands, floodplain and riverine vegetation.

Sitting at the mopane pan waterhole doing bird identification we were visited by four elephant bulls, drinking and splashing mud around, magic experience!

Mr de Kock led an excellent detailed dissection of impala – pupils were fully involved learning about the cardio/respiratory system digestion etc. They made biltong, boerewors and a potjie for supper. The remains of the carcass went out for a vulture watch and this also brought in the hyaenas at night.

Night drive always shows up some nocturnal animals and we had plenty to watch at the waterhole in front of camp. Firearms and target practice with accuracy and speed shoots is always popular and an important section of the syllabus.
Pupils have not had any practical work since March so this was a wonderful opportunity for them and we were very fortunate to fit in the trip before going back to school. Our thanks to the professional hunters who led the walks and for their valuable information along the way.
