Hunter Greeff's DOE Residential Project 2020

At Silver Creations, Harare.

One of the most powerful parts of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the Residential Project. This section of the Gold Award requires the participant to choose a place where they would like to work alongside people they do not know, either contributing towards a community project of some sort or to obtain life changing skills in the workplace. Teamwork, initiative and collaborative skills are polished and applied throughout the Residential Project. It is an experience that also broadens the participant’s outlook and horizons.

Hunter made a plan to work at Silver Creations for a week. With his passion for metal work, jewelry design and oozing creativity he organized a week of voluntary work with Lara Hair, the Managing Director of this special bespoke business.

For the whole week, Hunter lived on site at the business premises and worked with the eight creative designers and artisans. He actually experienced the entire process of creating silver artifacts from beginning to end; melting down silver, creating molds, refining and then polishing artifacts made from the molten metals. In addition to this, he contributed to the cooking of meals for himself and his work colleagues.

Hunter left his Residential Project more aware of what goes into this kind of business and having fulfilled a joint purpose with people he never knew before. He also generated some new, long-lasting friendships. Therefore, this activity fulfilled the purpose of the Residential project perfectly.
