Peterhouse Learner Guides Exploring Bulawayo

Our VIth Form Learner Guides recently travelled to Bulawayo to write their National Parks Exams. There are always some surprises in these papers and our pupils are anxiously waiting for their results.

We took the opportunity to visit the Bulawayo Natural History Museum where there are some new displays and plenty of interesting specimens to look at.

Our Learner Guides spent one night in the Matobo National Park – climbed granite whalebacks, looked at bushman paintings and visited the grave of Cecil Rhodes and his ‘View of the World’.

Cottage Build in Gosho Park

Gosho Park has some exciting news.

Two new cottages are currently being built adjacent to the Bush Camp. These lovely little two bedroom cottages, with en-suite bathrooms, will be the perfect little get-away into the park for visitors who are not all that keen on camping. The zebra can already be seen investigating the new facilities.

We can’t wait to show you the completed cottages.

B Block Chimanimani Expedition 2021

The Peterhouse Boys Chimanimani Expedition for 2021 started with some itchy noses from the Government administered antigen test, this we had to do in order to facilitate interprovincial travel. Our thanks to the Ministry of Health who gave permission for the expedition to proceed - even at the very shortest of notice.

This made the normally tedious issuing of food, packs, snacks, tents and packing the bus on Sunday afternoon, in preparation for an early departure on Monday morning, happen in a flash.

The prospect of hiking on some steep mountain slopes with a heavy pack for five days was most likely not an attractive proposition for some; while others (enthusiastic ones) were rearing to go.

Learner Guides Testing their Skills at Rukuru Camp

Recently our Learner Guide pupils were very fortunate to secure a booking to visit Rukuru – a safari camp near the Zambezi River. It has varied vegetation with mopane woodland, jesse bush and a floodplain not far downstream from Chirundu. With this diversity we were able to study many different trees and there were good populations of elephant, impala, baboon and warthog.

We were out before sunrise and our walks revealed a variety of spoor - pupils were able to identify the different tracks of some nocturnal animals – porcupine, hyaena, mongoose, civet etc. Birding was excellent and we observed riverine species and large numbers of aquatic birds on the banks of the river. We went through the SCI methods of measuring trophies and put this into practice when we found skulls on our walks.

NIAA Speech & Drama Festival Awards 2021

The National Institute of Allied Arts Speech and Drama Festival

This year’s festival was, once again, a series of virtual events. In 2020 Peterhouse Boys only had three entries; this year there were 15. Honours were not readily handed out this year as they were in 2020, so it was a great achievement that Hritik Kala (VIth Form) attained two Honours Grades. Congratulations too, to Declan Hulbert (D Block) who attained a First Grade.

Peterhouse Girls submitted 29 graded entries of which four were awarded First Grades. Congratulations to Chiedza Matsika, Tadiwa Ruzvidzo, Grace Murendo & Tinotenda Mapani for their achievements.
