Rector Reads The Gruffalo to the Grade 2s 2019

The Rector, Mr Howard Blackett, took time out of his busy morning schedule to read ‘The Gruffalo’ to the Springvale House Grade 2s in the Megahey Centre.

The eager children gathered in the Junior Reading room and settled down, momentarily, to listen to the engaging story but it wasn’t long before they were on their feet eager to get closer and get a better view of The Gruffalo.

Rowers Win Five Medals at the RSA Champs 2019

Our Rowers competed in the South Africa Rowing Championships held at Roodeplaat Dam. Pretoria.

We flew in, drove to the accommodation, rigged our boats and spent the next few days familiarizing ourselves with the course and practicing for the racing ahead. The races themselves took place over the following weekend, from 1st March to 3rd March. We then flew back on the 4th March.
All in all we returned with five medals.
Results are as follows:

Adventurous Journey to Imire Bush Camp 2019

Anyone afraid of bats? Or getting lost for a few hours?

Our second Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Exploration journey found us ten times wiser than the first had been. Strategies and rough route maps, which were influenced by the location of the irritable Black Rhino were all in place. It was all very exciting for the pupils who picked the Exploring over the Expedition. They felt it would be easier, which it is in some ways, but walking still needs to be done and the usual self-catering, self-sustaining has to happen all of which can be hard work.

Rector’s Dog Escapes Python at Dombo Dam 2019

The Peterhouse Boys Snake Club were involved in the dramatic rescue of the Rector’s dog at the weekend.
The boys were in Calderwood Park looking for non-venomous snakes for the club’s snake pit when the drama took place.

Mr and Mrs Blackett were in the park together with their eldest daughter Alice, who was over from the UK, and their three year old cocker spaniel Ruby.
Ruby had just gone to the water’s edge at Dombo Dam in anticipation of a stick being thrown into the water when a giant 3.6 metre long python grabbed her rear leg and began to coil around her. Mr Blackett immediately grabbed the python by its tail and dragged the snake (and Ruby) out of the shallows. Alice, too, began to wrestle with the coiling snake while Mrs Blackett took charge of Ruby who was panicking.

Sue van Heerden (Head of English)

Dear Governors, Committee Members, Parents, Guardians and Staff of Peterhouse,

I write, with great sadness, to inform you that Sue van Heerden (Head of English, Peterhouse Boys) died early this morning; Sue was diagnosed with cancer towards the end of last term.

Sue joined us at the beginning of 2018 and in the short time that she was with us made many good friends and did an outstanding job at the helm of the English Department. She will be greatly missed. On behalf of the Peterhouse community I send her parents, her brother Rory and her partner Andrew my sincere condolences.

It was Sue’s wish that she should be buried at Peterhouse. I will send out details concerning her funeral etc. as soon as I am able to do so.

Yours faithfully,

Howard Blackett

New Gym Under Construction 2019

Work on our new gym (i.e. the refurbishment of the old library) is progressing well – the new facility should be open for business at the start of next term. The new gym will provide a much updated, modern, light and airy area for our boys to train in.

I have no doubt that when it opens it will be a big hit with the boys.

Putting Green Under Construction 2019

Some of you may have noticed work being done on the grass to the left hand side as you enter the main gate of Peterhouse Boys – we are in the process of constructing a new golf putting green.

It is hoped that this new ‘Pitch and Putt’ facility will be ready to use during the Trinity term.

Mission Week 2019

The 2019 Mission Week took place from the 12th – 19th of February, when nine Zambezi Holidays leaders devoted their time to building relationships, answering questions and promoting a deeper relationship-based Christian faith within the Peterhouse senior schools. The theme was ‘Therefore, Stand’, based on Ephesians 6:10-17 which speaks about putting on the various aspects of the armour of God. The focus for the week was to promote a deeper understanding for the necessity of reading the Bible and praying in order to build your faith and relationship with God, and to stand on the word of God in any trial or situation.

Careers Fair 2019

We hosted a Careers' Fair at Peterhouse Boys last week.  The event was supported by a large number of universities/agents from various corners of the globe (including Exeter University, UK) and was attended by pupils in the 5th and 6th forms from PHB, PHG and other local schools.

I would like to thank Jenny Kirkman our Careers' Officer for organising the event - it was a great success.

By the way we deliver excellent careers' advice (Jenny Kirkman works from the first floor of the Megahey Centre) helping pupils to gain access to universities in the UK, USA,. Canada, Europe, South Africa, Australia, new Zealand etc.!

Rowing Training before the South Africa Champs 2019

I popped down to the dam the other day to see how everyone was getting along on their last dam day of training before they leave for RSA Rowing Champs.

What an amazing bunch of people this Tour squad is made up of. As always, in spite of the wind and dark skies, I found them so positive, ever so helpful, so gusty and determined. I have no doubt that they will have an amazing time together in South Africa. There was a mad scurry after this picture was taken before anyone could get pushed into the water off the jetty!

Scott and Sean, Aiden and Aqua, in their little boats ‘putt-putting’ up and down in the choppy waters – smiling and encouraging our children as they glided on by. Many, MANY thanks to all four coaches for their time and dedication over the last few months, preparing them for this Tour.
