Mr Tongayi Songore

Dear Governors, Committee Members, Staff and Parents of Peterhouse,

It is my very sad duty to let you know that Mr Tongayi Songore died suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday evening. The cause of his death has not yet been established but I can tell you that he was rushed to Borrowdale Hospital yesterday morning. He was 55.
Tongayi was one of our longest serving members of Common Room. He joined Peterhouse in January 1990 having been appointed by Alan Megahey. This term, Trinity 2019, was thus his 86th in post.

Tongayi served the school with distinction – he will be best remembered as a committed house tutor, the Assistant Housemaster of Snell, a junior hockey coach, a first class History teacher at all ages up to A level, but above all else, perhaps, as a passionate basketball coach – his enthusiasm for the sport, which he led for many years, was unparalleled and unrelenting.

Gavel Club Visit to Dominican Convent 2019

By Maka Hove

Our first Gavel meeting took place at Dominican Convent (DC). The meeting was a success, with us starting off with the formalities led by the DC girls. The meeting set-up was a new experience that most of us weren’t used to, but we quickly adapted, since after all, we are Kings of Peterhouse. Ice was broken with a short impromptu skit by Zivai Sinemani with his excellent imitation of Beyoncé.

C Block Outback - Learning Something New 2019

Eighty five boys kitted themselves up with rucksacks, tents and sleeping bags and hiked 45 km in early May for their C Block Outback trip. This is the second in a series of annual outdoor activities that they do throughout their time at Peterhouse.

The crisp early mornings and champagne blue skies greeted us every day, eventually warming up enough to enable the boys to swim and canoe all afternoon in the Kushinga Pikelele Dam or abseil at the Zambezi Holidays campsite.

Every day, we walked through beautiful miombo woodlands, past several schools and through working farms, busily getting on with their day. The onlookers wondering where on earth we were going all dressed up carrying our livelihoods on our backs. There were many smiles and ‘fistpumps’ as we encountered one another!
