Interact Spar Shoebox Challenge 2018

The 2019 Interact Board members completed the Spar Shoebox Challenge of 2018.

Enough stationery was donated by pupils in all three schools to fill 160 shoeboxes.

These shoeboxes were given to pupils of St Francis, and other pupils in schools in Rusape and Harare.

There were smiles of appreciation on the faces of the St Francis children as they received their boxes from pupils at Springvale, Peterhouse Girls and Peterhouse Boys this week.

A Block Far & Wide Trip 2018

While a great many of Zimbabwe’s post IGCSE pupils head out to party, the Peterhouse pupils embark on the Far and Wide experience in the Nyanga Mountains. For some the FOMO of not being on ‘O Break’ still batters their attitude! But, for the vast majority these days, the F&W experience has become a healthy part of tradition at Peterhouse, and is one they look forward to for many reasons: building relationships has come to be the cornerstone of the trip, but many pupils learn a lot about the strength of diversity in groups, particularly how the opposite sex’s strengths usually counter their own gender’s weaknesses!

All pupils grow in self-awareness, develop resilience, responsibility and resourcefulness. Everyone leaves with a sense of pride in some aspect of their accomplishment. This year all the participants experienced the newly built skywalks: one 30m and another 90m across the Mtarazi Falls.

Humani Learner Guide Conservation Trip 2018

10 pupils had the privilege of a trip to Humani for 5 nights. Our accommodation overlooked the Turgwe river and there was a constant stream of wildlife coming to drink.

All pupils had some training of firearm safety and target practice and the Learner Guides had the experience of hunting an impala under supervision of a professional hunter.

Early morning was the best time for our bush walks and there certainly was plenty to look at with the bush being so dry including wild dog and elephant herds. The habitat has good birding opportunities and interesting plants with the palm forests and riverine vegetation.

A Block Turaco Trail 2018

Picture this - the majority of the school leavers around the country left school, shortly after their last public examination, and were now celebrating in various places and, at exactly the same time, the Peterhouse A Block were all sitting on a school bus winding their way up to the start of the beautiful Turaco Trail for a week (to complete a grueling walk of about roughly 50Km)

Scenario One (set for most school leavers)

Eat and drink whatever and whenever you want, have endless relaxing, lazy days with nothing much planned, have endless lie-ins until 10 in the morning and watch loads of TV or play some game on a gadget of some sort.

Gaerezi Rods & Reels Fishing Weekend 2018

A few of our boys had the privilege of fishing in Zimbabwe’s top trout river over the weekend. It was a coaching weekend and boys also spent time catching and identifying insects which the trout eat.

Mr. Cook then tied flies to imitate the insects and explained how they move in the water – very interesting! The river was crystal clear and the water low so it was quite easy to spot the fish – the challenge is then to get them to take the fly!

Thanks to Mr Brown for coaching boys – some had never held a rod before let alone cast the line so it’s quite an achievement to catch a fish! - we hope our group of fishermen will grow next year.

Darting of Gosho Giraffe 2018

The Gosho Park scouts noticed over the weekend that our male giraffe had a metal ring around his back leg – maybe thrown over the fence?

He had stepped right on top of a piece of irrigation pipe and it was stuck above the hoof.

The experts were called in and darted the animal which can be a very tricky business with giraffe. Learner guides were there to assist and he went down quite quickly so the vet could remove the metal and there was no injury to the leg.

Ironwill 2018

The Ironwill is one of Zimbabwe’s most challenging adventure races that takes its competitors to the some of the most stunning places that our beloved Zimbabwe has to offer.

Michael Zartmann and Angus Fergusson competed in this race; it took place this year in the Kadoma area, based from Lasting Impressions, running from the 18th to the 22nd of April.

The first day greeted the competitors with a 50km ride and a 10km hike; the ride was mostly along single track and dusty double track roads. The Peterhouse boys made themselves well acquainted with their puncture repair kit as they patched up a total of five punctures and used four spare tubes. The hike on the first day, however, was lots of “bundu bashing” as everyone raced from waypoint to waypoint on their GPS’s (with no tracks to follow), finally ending at the camp…at the top of a hill named Everest.

D Block Move to Main House 2018

Our D Block boys have moved House! They are growing up.

Thursday afternoon saw our D Block boys in Tinokura packing up the last of their school kit into trunks, suitcases and bags in order to move out of their home for the past year. Tinokura was buzzing with boys clearing out and tidying up their dorms ready for a final D Block inspection.

Once done, Head of House Addmore Mawere, gave a moving address to the boys before asking them to gather for a quick group photo as a memento of their time together.

Leavers Service 2018

We bid farewell to our Leavers – Class of 2018 – this week at Peterhouse Boys.

The Leavers Service is normally addressed by a member of staff that would also be leaving Peterhouse at the end of the term, but this year the Rector felt it was fitting to address the Leavers personally.

Mr Howard Blackett joined Peterhouse in January 2013 and as such is about to complete 6 years as Rector. He was Rector to these fine young men when they started as boys in D Block Tinokura.
